The closure of the Groningen field has taken an effect on April 19, 2024. The King signed the law on Wednesday, April 17, 2024 which was published in the Government Gazette. This will put an end to gas extraction that started halfway the last century.
From that perspective the client had dismantled some locations and the last phase was to remove the old with oil polluted gas pipeline in the North of the Netherlands. To prevent spills, the client asked TECCURO to clean the pipeline and to displace any remaining fluids inside.
The pipeline had no launching or receiving facilities and started with a 10” diameter pipeline that decreased in size to a 6” diameter pipeline. Although the line was abandoned and preserved with nitrogen in the past, there were some indication that fluids could be inside. To minimize the environmental impact, the goal was to clean the 8,7 kilometre long multi-diameter pipeline as it was.
TECCURO cleaned the line with an emulsifying ecological friendly and biodegradable cleaning agent that is approved by IMO (in accordance with MEPC 590 Guidelines). The cleaning agent was pushed through the pipeline in a batch using multiple diameter pigs. After the cleaning, the pipeline was displaced by all remaining fluids. Wenau collected and transported the waste to a treatment plant.
